D&D 5e Point Buy Calculator

Free D&D 5e point buy calculator with standard 2014 rules, a 21-point Balanced Start homebrew, racial bonuses, presets, and shareable builds.

How to use the Point Buy Calculator

Choose the rules your group is using before allocating ability scores. The standard 2014 calculator and CluelessDM's Balanced Start are deliberately different systems; switch between them rather than mixing their budgets.

What are the standard 2014 point-buy rules?

All six abilities start at 8. You spend 27 points, and each base score can reach 15. Higher scores cost more: raising a score to 14 costs 7 points in total, and reaching 15 costs 9. The selected 2014 racial bonuses are added after point-buy allocation.

How does Balanced Start homebrew differ?

Balanced Start offers up to 21 points with a linear cost: each increase of one above 8 costs one point. Base scores are capped at 14; the final score cap is 16 after 2014 racial bonuses. Unspent points are allowed. This is an optional CluelessDM house rule, not official 2014 or 2024 character creation.

How do presets, locks, and sharing work?

Choose a preset for a quick legal allocation or generate a random valid one. Lock an ability to preserve that score while you try other allocations. When you're happy with the result, copy the build or shareable link for your group.
